A New Approach to Lightweight Radar Altimeters

چکیده
Abstruci-Test results and key principles are given for a radar altimeter designed for meteorological balloons. The instrument, which weighs 160 g and consumes 0.7 W, will HI a gap in meteorological sensing using balloone--an area where pressure altitude was formerly the prevailing reference. The instrument is basically a delay-lock radar utilizing a superregenerative RF stage. Long-term absolute accuracy of f 10 m and short-term atability of better than 2 m rms were measured at altitudes of 20 km.

Performances Study of Interferometric Radar Altimeters: from the Instrument to the Global Mission Definition
The main limitations of standard nadir-looking radar altimeters have been known for long. They include the lack of coverage (intertrack distance of typically 150 km for the T/P / Jason tandem), and the spatial resolution (typically 2 km for T/P and Jason), expected to be a limiting factor for the determination of mesoscale phenomena in deep ocean. In this context, various solutions using off-na...

Beginning with Seasat and continuing through the design for Jason-CS, all satellite radar altimeters have employed a pulse compression scheme known as full-deramp of a linear FM chirp. The process by which all conventional altimeters create a waveform from digitized radar echoes can lead to aliasing of the waveform. This was first noted by Bob Jensen in a 1999 paper (IEEE TGRS 37(2):651-658, do...
متن کاملGlobal Inland Water Monitoring from Satellite Radar Altimetry – a Glimpse into the Future
The capability of satellite radar altimeters to monitor the height changes of major lakes is well established. However, river systems present far more challenging targets. By retracking altimeter echoes using an expert system approach, river heights can be successfully monitored; this capability is bounded by the along-track sampling rate. However, a glimpse into the potential of future altimet...
متن کاملUtilizing GPS To Determine Ionospheric Delay Over the Ocean
Several spaceborne altimeters have been built and flown, and others are being developed, to provide measurements of ocean and ice sheet topography. Until the launch of TOPEX, altimeters were single frequency systems incapable of removing the effects of ionospheric delay on the radar pulse. With the current state of the art in satellite altimetry, the ionosphere causes the largest single error w...
